How Leaders Can Develop Team Ownership Thinking
One of the biggest shifts you can make as a leader is moving from assigning work to creating ownership.
There’s a big difference.
Weak leadership sounds like:
“Here’s what I need you to do.”
Stronger leadership sounds like:
“Here’s the outcome we need. How would you approach it?”
The first gives someone a task.
The second gives them responsibility, thinking space and trust.
For high-potential emerging leaders, this is an important leadership skill to develop. When people are given genuine ownership, they are more likely to think critically, build confidence, take accountability and look for better ways of doing things.
They become invested in the outcome because they feel trusted to contribute to it.
This becomes particularly important when leading teams through change. Because when circumstances are changing, leaders rarely have all the answers. Trying to provide every solution can create dependency and leave your team waiting for direction.
Instead, ask better questions.
What do you think is the best way forward?
What options have you considered?
What would you do if I wasn’t here to solve this for you?
What support do you need from me?
This doesn’t mean stepping back and leaving people to figure everything out alone. It means knowing when to coach rather than rescue.
That is where strengths coaching can make a real difference. Rather than immediately focusing on what someone doesn’t know or can’t do, effective leaders help people recognise the capabilities they already have and apply them to new challenges.
Over time, this builds something far more valuable than task completion.
It builds capability.
And capable people are more likely to become confident, adaptable and accountable leaders themselves.
The goal isn’t to develop a team that needs you for every decision.
It is to create resilient, engaged teams that can think, contribute and move forward without waiting for you to have all the answers.
As an emerging leader, ask yourself:
Am I giving people work to complete or am I giving them opportunities to own?
That distinction could fundamentally change the way you lead.
