Why, in the midst of this heated gender debate, do we not hear more from men?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not talking about the few men who are causing the problem (the misogynists, the bullies, the rapists)… I\u2019m talking about the vast majority of good, normal men<\/strong> who respect and value women.<\/p>\n

Over the last fortnight, I\u2019ve had a number of conversations with these good men about sexism, the pay gap, \u2018casual\u2019 harassment and the issue of violence towards women.<\/p>\n

Men who, when you ask<\/em> them about it, condemn misogynistic and violent behaviour as \u201cappalling\u201d but that\u2019s about\u00a0as far as you get with them.<\/p>\n

It surprised me at first that many of these good men don\u2019t appear to have thought about these issues too deeply or have really formulated a view at all.<\/p>\n

But perhaps that\u2019s what we all struggle with when the minority group in question is not one to which you belong.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not long ago, we lived in an apartment. The tenants below us were two twenty-something men. They had a lot of parties.<\/p>\n

One Saturday afternoon – it was about 4pm – I was in my living room with my two young children and I could hear these men talking downstairs on their balcony with a few male mates.<\/p>\n

One of the tenants (let\u2019s call him Mike) was cooking a barbecue. \u201cOne of your legendary parties mate,\u201d one bloke said to Mike. \u201cYeah, another feed \u2018em and f*** \u2018em party!\u201d Mike said, laughing.<\/p>\n

My ears pricked up.<\/p>\n

Mike and his mate were both roaring loudly with laughter. They were now recounting intimate details about their girlfriends and their last party. Loudly. Obnoxiously. Graphically.<\/p>\n

(I might have heard the nervous muttering of any good men present but, to be honest, I wouldn\u2019t have heard it over the raucous laughter that dominated).<\/p>\n

I went onto my own balcony, leaned over and shouted down at them. \u201cHow dare you talk about women like that Mike – with such utter disrespect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike was silent (for once) and sheepishly looked up, popping his palm up as if to apologise. I ignored him. \u201cAnd you lot,\u201d I said gesturing to the group of men sucking their beer bottles, \u201cYou need to do better and hold him<\/em> accountable. That kind of conversation is just not ok.\u201d<\/p>\n

A couple of them muttered apologies. Then twenty minutes later, the poor unsuspecting group of girlfriends arrived for their barbecue and the apparent bear trap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

A lot of moderate men object that they\u2019re being lumped together with the minority. They\u2019re often immediately defensive and sometimes patronising,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to remember, Rebecca, most men aren\u2019t like that. I\u2019m<\/em> not like that\u201d.<\/p>\n

(I think we women have got that. I think we realise that most men are not<\/strong> bullies, blaggards or rapists).<\/p>\n

One good man I spoke to even warned me to be careful about the \u201cextreme and potentially divisive language\u201d I was using (I think I might have used the word \u201cmisogynist\u201d a couple of times). \u201cWith extreme language like that Rebecca, you run the risk of alienating us good guys in the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n

I saw that response as weak. A get-out.<\/p>\n

I also saw it as yet another way to blame the women<\/em> for the situation we find ourselves in; because of my \u2018feminist ranting\u2019 I <\/em>was putting the good guys off. The double bind rears its ugly head once again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I understand that it is very difficult to genuinely put yourself in someone else\u2019s shoes<\/strong>, see the world through their lens and try to feel their experience. But \u2018easy\u2019 and \u2018convenient\u2019 never get us anywhere.<\/p>\n

We need the good men to feel a little inconvenienced<\/strong> right now. To stick their necks out and try a bit harder to listen up and really empathise with our situation.<\/p>\n

Right now, all I see from the good men is quiet mutterings (at best), hesitancy and inaction.<\/p>\n

> If you\u2019re a good man and you\u2019re reading this, I wonder if you wish to see your wife retire<\/strong> on 40% less superannuation than you?<\/p>\n

> I wonder if you feel joyful to see your wife<\/strong> or partner, sister or mother belittled, undermined and burned out by an archaic system?<\/p>\n

> I wonder if you \u2013 and your friends – would love to be entitled to a more lengthy paternity<\/strong> leave or for men having greater work-life balance to be viewed with deep respect rather than with disdain?<\/p>\n

For anything to change, the voices and opinions of good, sensible men like you<\/em> must be very much part of this conversation.<\/p>\n

These voices need to be heard on TV and in mainstream media.<\/p>\n

They need to be heard in parliament.<\/p>\n

They need to be heard in C-suite offices.<\/p>\n

They need to be heard in general conversation at barbecues and in bars.<\/p>\n

Because \u2018good man\u2019: you might not be part of the problem but, by staying silent you are definitely – and I mean definitively<\/em> – not part of any<\/em> solution.<\/p>\n

Your silence is regarded by women as apathy and rejection<\/strong> (\u201cYou\u2019re on your own here ladies\u201d) but worse, misogynists<\/strong> see your silence as a green light for them to continue to belittle, to degrade, to harass, to harm.<\/p>\n

We women are exhausted by the consistent potential and real<\/em> threat to our dignity and our safety, of having to work doubly hard to \u2018prove our worth\u2019 at work, of having to fend off unwanted comments and harassment.<\/p>\n

And the best you can do is become more cognisant of the problem and speak up, call out poor behaviour and do your utmost to champion all the good women<\/strong> around you.<\/p>\n
