I talk a lot in my career coaching business, when I speak on panels and at conferences about being purposeful<\/strong> in your career to fast track your progress.<\/p>\n

So I have a question I want to ask you:<\/p>\n

Are you a piece of driftwood<\/strong>, being pushed from one beach to another, sometimes drifting out at sea for months (or years) at a time, rotting away and at the total behest of both the elements and the tide…<\/em><\/p>\n

Or…<\/p>\n

Are you a bullet train<\/strong>, sure of your destination and eager just to go, Go, GO!?<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Being purposeful<\/strong> in your career means you’re doing 3 things:<\/p>\n

1 . You know what you want<\/strong> (it might not be a 100% solid plan yet, and that’s ok)<\/p>\n

2 . You’re open to adapting your plan<\/strong> if other, more aligned, more exciting career opportunities present themselves to you along the way<\/p>\n

3 . You take regular action<\/strong> towards achieving what you want<\/p>\n

And that’s it.<\/p>\n

When you think about it like this, being purposeful about creating the outcomes you want is all pretty simple right?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However…<\/p>\n

In my experience, I have seen that most people aren’t<\/em> clear of what they want and, as a result, they are<\/em> that piece of passive driftwood<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Sorry if that’s a bit harsh, but unless I say it like it is, nothing will change…<\/p>\n

See it as tough love<\/em>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

So…<\/p>\n

Are you committed right now to breaking this cycle and determining what you want from your career?<\/p>\n

Or…<\/p>\n

Are you prepared to continue to allow other people to determine your career trajectory for you<\/em><\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m sensing you want to seize control again and make some new decisions in your career…<\/p>\n

Am I right?<\/p>\n

Well that’s great…<\/p>\n

So, what do<\/em> you want?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Think about the next 12 months… what would be a great outcome for you?<\/p>\n

Take yourself to this time next year…<\/p>\n

Imagine all that success you have had in that timeframe…<\/p>\n

Now you can answer that question: what do<\/strong> you want?<\/p>\n
