{"id":2109,"date":"2021-11-02T09:23:40","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T09:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2025-05-06T07:21:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T07:21:05","slug":"is-work-experience-needed-for-entry-level-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/is-work-experience-needed-for-entry-level-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Work Experience Needed For Entry Level Jobs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked this week by Cayla Dengate, Linkedin News Editor, for my thoughts on this one and was glad to share my 10 cents worth because&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough I\u2019ve been approached by a number of women at university over the last 12 months for this <em>very<\/em> reason:<\/p>\n<p>They want to<strong> land internships within banks whilst still at uni<\/strong> to gain that \u2018requested work experience\u2019 (as well as a competitive edge) so that they have a flying start when they are ready to enter the job market once uni is finished.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s back up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>An \u2018entry\u2019 level job traditionally meant &#8216;having next to no work experience&#8217;&#8230; traditionally, it was a <em>starter job<\/em> for fresh university graduates keen to join the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly this has begun to change in many highly competitive industries (<em>which is most of them, let\u2019s be honest<\/em>)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Employers can be more bullish about <strong>requesting more from candidates<\/strong> and, in some respects, I can see why.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.register.illuminategrowth.com.au\/7habitswelcome\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2112 \" src=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Overlooked.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Overlooked.png 872w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Overlooked-300x61.png 300w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Overlooked-768x157.png 768w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Overlooked-600x122.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Say a fresh candidate out of uni has attained a good degree <em>and <\/em>has also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volunteered for 3 months for a not-for-profit or<\/li>\n<li>Spent some quality time shadowing an exec or<\/li>\n<li>Landed an active internship (or maybe a <em>few different<\/em> internships) whilst at uni\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This tells a prospective employer<em> a lot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>These additional real,<em> relevant<\/em> corporate work experiences will have given the candidate:<\/p>\n<p>A genuine insight into working life&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>She will have had exposure to real-life problem solving and commercial decision making&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst also demonstrating her proactivity and genuine interest for an industry&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And her ability to think strategically about her career.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2058\" src=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Review-w-boss.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Review-w-boss.png 568w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Review-w-boss-300x195.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a win\/win:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The employer gets a more<em> rounded<\/em> candidate&#8230;
