The pandemic has shown us just how fragile mental health can be, especially when posed with unseen pressures and constant uncertainty…<\/p>\n

And working mums have certainly bared the brunt of much of those pressures over the last 24 months.<\/p>\n

If it wasn’t the enforced home-schooling…<\/p>\n

Managing work-life balance (like never before)…<\/p>\n

Or increased mental load…<\/p>\n

It was the stress of financial pressures…<\/p>\n

Concerns about job security…<\/p>\n

Or isolation, solitude and severance from family and friends.<\/p>\n

In Danielle Sherman-Lazar’s book, ‘It’s Ok to Not Be Ok: Adults Get Big Feelings Too’<\/a>, she shares many home truths.<\/p>\n

Here are some that hit home with me:<\/p>\n

In our society, a mother suffers guilt no matter what she does.\u2063 If she\u2019s on top of her kids, making sure everything\u2019s okay, she\u2019s called a Helicopter Mom, and if she lets them run around as she sits on the side talking to a friend, she\u2019s “neglectful”.\u2063<\/p>\n

If she prefers cooking from scratch and organic-everything, her kids are \u201cgoing to go crazy on junk food when they go to someone else\u2019s house.\u201d And if she feeds them donuts and muffins for breakfast some mornings because she\u2019s in a rush or just because<\/em>, then her kids are “unhealthy”. \u2063<\/p>\n

If she stays home with her kids, she should be working\u2014”how can her family financially keep up?\u201d But if she’s working, she’s met with “they’re only little once.”\u2063<\/p>\n

In a society that knows \u201ceverything\u201d and places too many expectations on moms…<\/p>\n

If you listen to everyone else,\u2063 you\u2019re always going to fall short.\u2063 So, DON\u2019T LISTEN,\u2063 and stop feeling bad for your choices.\u2063<\/p>\n

Throw those internalized unrealistic expectations away and do what\u2019s best for you and your family.\u2063 It\u2019s called your family<\/em> for a reason.\u2063<\/p>\n

Besides, if you love your children and try,\u2063 you\u2019re a good mom.\u2063<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

I’ve always held the view that you know what’s best for you and for your family…<\/p>\n

And what other people think about you is their<\/em> business – not yours. They’re judging you on their<\/em> values, not yours.<\/p>\n

Just as there’s no one way<\/strong> to cut a cake…<\/p>\n

There’s no one way<\/strong> to parent well either!<\/p>\n
