During last year\u2019s lockdown…<\/p>\n

I planted a little lemon tree sapling in our garden with my children.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always wanted a lemon tree and it has made me feel really happy watching it grow over the last 18 months.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been somewhat cathartic.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now Spring and Elise, Carter and my little tree has just started to bloom…<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got 12 flowers in total so far…<\/p>\n

And, although I know that big established lemon trees can flower and fruit all year round…<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure what would happen with a little-dinky-baby-tree like ours\u2026<\/p>\n

So of course, I turned to green-fingered Google for advice.<\/p>\n

It said,<\/p>\n

\u201cNew trees might not bear fruit for the first few years and when they do, the first lemons might never mature and simply fall off. This is the tree learning how to fruit, but don\u2019t worry: your yield the following season may be more successful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite being a bit sad that I may have to put making homemade lemonade (and having homegrown sliced lemon in my G&Ts) on hold for a few more months…<\/p>\n

It has compelled me to nurture this little plant even more.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The little tree is like a child…<\/p>\n

Practicing how to grow…<\/p>\n

Practicing it\u2019s fruit-making art…<\/p>\n

Learning what works (and what doesn\u2019t)…<\/p>\n

And getting stronger every time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So…<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t<\/em> be sad if the first flowers never fruit…<\/p>\n

Or if any lemons that we do<\/em> get, prematurely fall off their stems\u2026<\/p>\n

Because…<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll know that our little tree is getting stronger every day…<\/p>\n

And, crucially…<\/p>\n

It was never striving to be perfect<\/em> from the get-go anyway.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We women can fall into that trap of trying to be perfect<\/strong> from the get go, can\u2019t we?<\/p>\n

Of being brutally hard<\/strong> on ourselves\u2026<\/p>\n

Of wanting to have\u00a0all\u00a0the answers fully prepared before we are ready<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

But the problem with chasing perfectionism is that perfectionism …<\/p>\n

Is a brittle <\/strong>strategy…<\/p>\n

And the one who will break, is only ever going to be you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When you develop a growth mindset you will become more flexible and objective in how you look at yourself (and treat yourself too).<\/p>\n
