How to Get Paid What You’re Worth<\/h2>\n

Salary negotiation is about being prepared<\/strong> and being confident in your value<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

Because firstly, I want to make sure you are<\/em> prepared\u2026<\/p>\n

And secondly, I don\u2019t want you to undersell yourself<\/strong> ever <\/em>again.<\/p>\n

Settling For Being Underpaid is Not Being Paid What You’re Worth<\/h2>\n

Having to wait for another <\/em>12 months to get another opportunity to talk about the state of your salary is a very, very<\/em> long time indeed.<\/p>\n

Settling<\/strong> for an average salary is not okay.<\/p>\n

Being grateful<\/strong> for your role or employment (although lovely) is simply not enough.<\/p>\n

I’m sharing some words of tough love here now…<\/p>\n

You are working really, really<\/em> hard…<\/p>\n

And making your company more profitable every day, right?<\/p>\n

I\u2019d say that<\/em> is deserving <\/strong>of some proper financial recognition…<\/p>\n

Wouldn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n

Think of it like this:<\/h2>\n

Hundreds of years ago, when money wasn’t the focus, people would go to markets and trade goods instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you give me your goat, then I\u2019ll give you my iron shield\u201d<\/em>\u2026 that sort of thing.<\/p>\n

Negotiations were based on making fair trades<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The world today is no different<\/strong>\u2026 even if money is<\/em> involved.<\/p>\n

You being paid appropriately<\/em> for the work you do is a fair trade<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an exchange of value<\/strong>, just the same.<\/p>\n

But What\u2019s Really Stopping You<\/em> From Asking for that Pay Rise?<\/h2>\n

In my experience, there are two things that are likely stopping you:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Negative beliefs<\/strong> (about yourself, your worth, your value, concerns about being judged…)<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A lack of strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s it\u2026 simple<\/em>, right?!<\/p>\n

So, if you\u2019ve got a minute, let\u2019s look at both right now together, shall we?<\/p>\n

So Have a Think….<\/h2>\n

What your beliefs <\/strong>are about asking for a pay rise?<\/p>\n

Are they really positive<\/strong>, empowering<\/strong>, unstoppable<\/strong>, deserving<\/strong>, confident beliefs<\/strong>\u2026?<\/p>\n

Or not?<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m sensing, if you’ve read this far, you might have a few doubts about your ability to negotiate a better deal for yourself…<\/p>\n

So if that’s you, here are a few questions to get you pumping:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. What if you decided right now <\/strong>that you’re going to ask for a 10% or 20%<\/strong> salary increase?<\/li>\n
  2. What would that new monthly income equate to<\/strong> in a $ value?<\/li>\n
  3. How would that extra income benefit you<\/strong> and others around you?<\/li>\n
  4. What\u2019s the compound benefit <\/em><\/strong>of that increase over 12 months?<\/li>\n
  5. How about over 24 months?<\/li>\n
  6. What difference would that money make to you and to your life?<\/li>\n
  7. How much more happy, confident and engaged <\/strong>would you be at work with that income coming in?<\/li>\n
  8. How much happier would you be at home?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I\u2019m guessing it would make a big <\/em><\/strong>difference\u2026<\/p>\n

    Because when you are paid appropriately, it builds phenomenal confidence and esteem.<\/p>\n

    And I\u2019m guessing that is worth asking for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Let Me Guess: You’ve Got Some Objections?<\/h2>\n

    \u201cBut wait Rebecca!\u201d<\/em> you say\u2026<\/p>\n

    \u201cGetting paid what I’m worth is hard. What if my boss <\/em>judges me negatively<\/em><\/strong> for asking for more money?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

    And I say,<\/p>\n

    \u201cWell… what if instead<\/em> of judging<\/em> you, your boss is impressed to see an employee in front of them who can negotiate<\/strong>? What if they see an employee successfully validating her own impact<\/strong>? What if they respect<\/strong> that employee for highlighting her ambitions<\/strong> and so earmark her for future opportunities?\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Here’s a quick tip:<\/p>\n

    Remember to focus on what you DO offer, rather than focusing on what you <\/em><\/p>\n

    feel you LACK.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Next, Let’s Talk Strategy\u2026<\/h2>\n

    A pay increase strategy begins the moment you just got a pay rise. 😊<\/p>\n

    Be thinking months in advance <\/em>about…<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Who <\/strong>needs to know that I want a pay rise?<\/li>\n
    2. Who <\/strong>needs to know what $ pay rise I see as fair \/ I am expecting?<\/li>\n
    3. What action <\/strong>do they need to see from me to justify that request?<\/li>\n
    4. How can I make sure (in the months before my pay review meeting) they know the value<\/strong> I am delivering?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Here’s another quick tip:<\/p>\n

      Don’t assume that by <\/em>working hard<\/em><\/strong> you’ll automatically get a pay rise.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Psst! I’m Guessing You May Have Another Objection?<\/h2>\n

      \u201cBut wait Rebecca!\u201d<\/em> you say\u2026<\/p>\n

      \u201cI HATE the idea of doing office politics! I shouldn’t have to shout about what I’m doing… people <\/em>should just know<\/em><\/strong>.” <\/em><\/p>\n

      And I say,<\/p>\n

      \u201cFirstly your boss isn’t a mind reader.<\/p>\n

      And secondly, working extremely hard is an activity but it is not a strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      If you want to build your exec presence, land better career opportunities and get paid appropriately…. then you need to learn how to position yourself <\/strong>properly and ask for what you want.”<\/p>\n

      You’ve Got This!<\/h2>\n

      To be really successful at negotiating your own pay…<\/p>\n

      Your first step is always believing <\/strong>that you are already adding ample value to warrant the pay increase.<\/p>\n

      In my 10 years+ experience, as a Career Coach to corporate women…<\/p>\n

      I see far too many brilliant, intelligent women self-sabotage their chances of promotion and pay rises<\/strong> because they ‘feel undeserving’ or ‘not ready’.<\/p>\n

      Don’t let that be you!<\/em><\/p>\n

      Become your own best coach and start documenting all the value you’re already adding<\/strong> and I guarantee, you’ll be blown away by what you uncover.<\/p>\n
