Let’s face it…<\/p>\n

The world is a hectic place…<\/p>\n

And we are all bombarded with millions of different pieces of data every minute.<\/p>\n

To make sense of the world…<\/p>\n

We all make snap judgments quickly<\/strong> so that we can free up some headspace to process the next million data points heading our way.<\/p>\n

So, what does that mean for you?<\/h2>\n

What that means, is that people (your boss, your clients, your peers) are making judgments and arriving at decisions about you very quickly too…<\/p>\n

Which, at times, can be extremely helpful<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Especially if those all-or-nothing labels run along these lines:<\/p>\n

“She’s a natural leader<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s a team player<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s an exceptional critical thinker<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s top 10% talent<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s adding tonnes of commercial value<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

In instances like these, the labelling works massively in your favour…<\/p>\n

Because labels are all-encompassing…<\/p>\n

Meaning, the single label can have a wide reaching positive impact on how you are perceived generally.<\/p>\n

The world truly becomes your oyster!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But, what if those labels are restricting you?<\/h2>\n

What if those labels are restricting you somehow…<\/p>\n

Or are downright negative instead?<\/p>\n

I regularly have clients seek out my help because they feel they are not being perceived<\/strong> as they would like to be.<\/p>\n

They feel pigeonholed…<\/p>\n

Deeply limited…<\/p>\n

Stuck…<\/p>\n

And, as a consequence, are often struggling with confidence concerns too.<\/p>\n

So…<\/p>\n

What if you are being limited<\/strong> by the ‘labels’ that key decision makers are applying to you?<\/p>\n

What might those labels look like?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well…<\/p>\n

Here are some common examples I hear in my coaching practice to get the ball rolling…<\/p>\n

See if any of these rings true for you:<\/p>\n

“She’s operational only<\/strong>, not strategic.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s not leadership<\/strong> material.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She shows little ambition<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Can you see how the all-or-nothing<\/em> nature of labels can be so restrictive and damaging<\/em>?<\/p>\n

As well as limiting the scope of your career trajectory…<\/p>\n

Labels can also be applied in a behavioural way.<\/p>\n

In other words, your boss might have observed a specific behaviour<\/strong> in you and that critical observation now forms their entire perception<\/em> of you:<\/p>\n

“She’s a blocker of ideas<\/strong>; she shuts people down.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s didactic<\/strong>, non-inclusive.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“She’s too difficult to deal with<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Labels diminish you to the label<\/span>… and little beyond it.<\/p>\n

And it can make it difficult, once that judgment has been made, for your boss to perceive all the other qualities you (do) offer.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"So how can you change unhelpful perceptions of you?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Well…<\/p>\n

Changing perceptions (and their resultant labels) is actually easier than you think.<\/p>\n

#1<\/p>\n

Your first step is to become consciously aware<\/strong> of what your boss’ limiting perception actually could be…<\/p>\n

(If you haven’t identified that just yet, loop back round to the top of this article and get brutally honest about how you think you’re currently being perceived).<\/p>\n

#2<\/p>\n

Decide how happy (out of 10) you are about your boss having that perception of you.<\/p>\n

#3<\/p>\n

If it’s bothering you enough and you feel like it’s holding you back<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Take action.<\/p>\n

Doing nothing will change nothing.<\/em><\/p>\n

So get some support.<\/p>\n

Get some help.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m always blown away by the shift in available opportunities<\/strong> that occurs for my clients once they address the issues like these that are holding them back.<\/p>\n

Often making small changes… can have HUGE positive impacts!<\/p>\n
