Should you just accept or push back on a mediocre job offer?<\/p>\n

I just got off the phone with a new client, Miranda, who has been in her current role for 2 years.<\/p>\n

She was beyond frustrated\u2026 even angry\u2026<\/p>\n

I could feel her blood boiling through my phone!<\/p>\n

She had just got out of a meeting with her boss\u2019 boss, who had suggested she might be interested in a \u2018new opportunity\u2019<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

Miranda had been excited initially.<\/p>\n

The business was thriving.<\/p>\n

What would this new opportunity involve?<\/em><\/p>\n

Would she be getting the recognition<\/strong> she had been patiently waiting for?<\/p>\n

Would a new job title<\/strong>, or a pay rise<\/strong><\/a>, be coming her way?<\/p>\n

A Disappointing Offer…<\/h2>\n

Upon talking the \u2018opportunity\u2019 through with her boss\u2019 boss\u2026<\/p>\n

It became apparent\u2026<\/p>\n

That this role was not<\/strong> what Miranda was hoping it would be.<\/p>\n

The gist of the conversation was this:<\/p>\n

The expectation was that she would take over her boss\u2019 role<\/strong> imminently\u2026<\/p>\n

As well as six new direct reports<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

But without <\/strong>the addition of a new job title\u2026<\/p>\n

And without <\/strong>the addition of a pay rise, despite the increased responsibility and workload.<\/p>\n

Miranda felt flat.<\/p>\n

Humiliated even.<\/p>\n

The expectation was that she would just accept<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

And that she would be grateful <\/em>for this ‘opportunity’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But…<\/p>\n

How was she supposed to take on this larger role without also<\/strong> pushing for the recognition<\/strong> she both wanted and believed she deserved?<\/p>\n

Especially as she had voiced her desire to take over her boss\u2019 role 12 months previously.<\/p>\n

She felt she had already demonstrated her ability and suitability for the role 10-times over.<\/p>\n

What else did she have to do to get the recognition she deserved?<\/em><\/p>\n

What Are Your Options?<\/h2>\n

Have you<\/em> ever been put in a position like Miranda\u2019s?<\/p>\n

It can be difficult to know how<\/em><\/strong> to push back<\/strong> when you simply can not accept the terms on offer, without burning any bridges.<\/p>\n

Especially if you know your business is running profitably.<\/p>\n

What would you<\/em> do?<\/p>\n

Would you:<\/p>\n

  1. A)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Accept the role immediately and be grateful to have been asked?<\/li>\n
  2. B)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Accept the opportunity begrudgingly, not pushing for the job title or pay you felt the role required?<\/li>\n
  3. C)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Take a step back and make a list first of how success in the role should be <\/em>rewarded?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Or\u2026 D), E), F)\u2026?<\/p>\n

    There are always<\/em> options available to you\u2026<\/p>\n

    And immediately accepting any<\/em> new role is rarely in your best interests.<\/p>\n

    If there is one thing I have learned during my 13 years as a career and executive coach is…<\/p>\n

    You must never settle for a role that is mediocre<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    That offers mediocre returns…<\/p>\n

    That doesn\u2019t fit into your own plan…<\/p>\n

    Or help you further your career.<\/p>\n

    Never settle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Always challenge an offer and consider it deeply.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Firstly is it strategically aligned<\/em> with your own career aspirations?<\/li>\n
    2. Secondly is it rewarding you appropriately<\/em> for the energy you will expire in doing it?<\/li>\n
    3. Thirdly is it giving you the stretch<\/em> you need right now?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      And a bunch of other simple, but vital, questions that you should ask yourself. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

      Speaking to a neutral coach like me can be really valuable when you are assessing a new role, a new offer, a new ‘opportunity’…<\/p>\n
