If you feel invisible at work or as if your boss doesn’t have the perception of you that you’d like, it might be time to get started creating your personal brand!<\/span><\/p>\n

Because, and you may not know this,\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I built my Career Coaching business, I worked in London for many years in the advertising industry\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Working tirelessly with some phenomenally smart and creative people…<\/span><\/p>\n

To build communications strategies and campaigns for clients including HSBC, Kimberly Clark, Pfizer and BBC.<\/span><\/p>\n

And one thing that I learned, early on as an Account Exec…<\/span><\/p>\n

Is that a \u2018brand\u2019 is not<\/strong> a real, tangible<\/strong> entity\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, Coca-Cola for example isn\u2019t real\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither is Ferrari\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither is Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of these brands exist solely in the minds and hearts<\/strong> of the people who consume and engage with their products\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

The brands themselves are actually perceptions<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the reason why, for instance, Consumer A (in Tokyo), Consumer B (in Australia) and Consumer C (in France) all have a similar perception of any one brand\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Is that marketing and advertising people have told them<\/strong> what they want that perception<\/strong> to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that message is shared consistently and frequently to enforce it (through advertising, experiential marketing, digital marketing, social me<\/span>dia etc).<\/p>\n

How Does This Relate to Your Personal Brand?<\/h2>\n

Now let\u2019s talk for a moment about you\u2026 😊<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re feeling in any way unrecognised<\/strong> in your career right now\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Invisible<\/strong> even\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Unheard<\/strong>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Lacking direction<\/strong>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the question I want to ask you right now is,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDoes your boss (and other key decision makers around you) have the perception<\/strong> of you that you want<\/strong> them to\u2026 or not?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Because if they don’t, it can definitely harm your prospects and the speed at which you’ll progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily, there are lots of different ways that perception can be formed.<\/span><\/p>\n

In my business I coach my clients on a variety of these measures to make sure they are creating that positioning and perception…<\/span><\/p>\n

Consistently and frequently…<\/span><\/p>\n

That will help them succeed with their career goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

2 Questions To Help You Create The Perception You Want<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s just talk about a couple of those measures right now\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

(I\u2019ll refer to your ‘boss’ in the examples\u2026 but feel free to substitute that word for whichever decision maker you know would be able to help you further your career)\u2026<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Here goes…<\/span><\/p>\n

Grab a pad and a pen and have a think about these 2 questions:<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #1:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

How do you make your boss feel<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

If you answered: “I make my boss feel safe; smart; supported”<\/strong> etc you are probably on-track.<\/span><\/p>\n

However…<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

If you answered: “I make my boss feel confused; uncertain; frustrated”<\/strong> etc\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Then this could genuinely be the most powerful lightbulb moment you\u2019ve had all year. 😉<\/span><\/p>\n

And so to…<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #2:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If your boss could sum you up in 3 words<\/strong> what would s\/he say?<\/span><\/p>\n

If you jotted down words like:<\/span><\/p>\n

*Smart<\/span><\/p>\n

*Winning mentality<\/span><\/p>\n

*Strategic<\/span><\/p>\n

*Innovative<\/span><\/p>\n

*Gets stuff done<\/span><\/p>\n

*Safe hands etc…<\/span><\/p>\n

And that list aligns too with your intentions<\/strong>, you are probably on track.<\/span><\/p>\n

However…<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

If you wrote down:<\/span><\/p>\n

*Who is this person?<\/span><\/p>\n

*Have I heard of her?<\/span><\/p>\n

*She’s always late<\/span><\/p>\n

*She’s too quiet<\/span><\/p>\n

*She’s difficult to work with etc\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

This could be (yup you guessed it)…<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The most\u00a0powerful lightbulb moment you\u2019ve had all year. 😉<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Perception is Reality<\/h2>\n

In conclusion, these are questions to reveal your boss’ perception<\/strong> remember\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Their perceptions might not be true<\/strong> (in your mind)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Or fair<\/strong>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

But their perceptions are still their reality<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if their reality is not working in your favour…<\/span><\/p>\n

It is absolutely the moment right now…<\/span><\/p>\n

To take some proactive action and decide you want to work on creating a new<\/em> perception…<\/span><\/p>\n

A positioning<\/strong>…<\/span><\/p>\n

And building the reputation and credibility you want and need to be successful – and deeply fulfilled – in your career.<\/span><\/p>\n
