We are starting 2023 off with a bang &#8211; because I want to help you get promoted this year!<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m sharing 3 things you <strong>must NOT do<\/strong> in 2023&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be deeply fulfilled and successful in your career.<\/p>\n<p>And&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer to <em>listen<\/em> to this conversation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We just went live on our podcast &#8211; <em>Her Ambitious Career<\/em> &#8211; with this ep this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the episode&#8230; and if reading is more your thing, <em>read on<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-11962739\"><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1805692\/11962739-ep-74-3-things-not-to-do-in-2023-with-rebecca-allen-career-success-coach.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-11962739&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3 Things NOT to do in 2023:<\/h2>\n<p>So, as I do every 1 January, I\u2019m here to tell you what 3 things to AVOID doing this year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here is the first one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It might seem a bit &#8216;heavy&#8217; to start with this one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Which is why we need to start with it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>#1 Do NOT Internalise Our Own Discrimination<\/h2>\n<p>Gender bias is still a challenge that we, as a society, continue to battle in the 21st century (believe it or not).<\/p>\n<p>Which means that, in some workplaces, women are still encountering comments like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You just need to be louder.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You need to be more assertive &#8211; but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not too<\/span> assertive.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You need to be more confident &#8211; if you\u2019re going to be seen as a leader.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You\u2019re not quite right for the role \u2013 despite your (extensive) qualifications and experience.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some women are excluded from the conversation \u2013 and the decision making table all together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst others are passed over for promotion in favour of a potentially less suitable (too often, male) candidate&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Who is also likely &#8216;mates with the boss&#8217; and thus seen as a \u2018safer\u2019 option because&#8230; well, <em>he\u2019s just like the boss<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>(That&#8217;s called <em><strong>affinity bias<\/strong><\/em> by the way).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What this complex challenge does, for many women, is they internalise the discrimination that they&#8217;re faced with, often reaching conclusions like this, whether consciously or not:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I<\/em> must be the problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I<\/em> must not be good at this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I<\/em> was passed over promotion because I\u2019m not good enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I<\/em> must just need to work harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We all know women are <em>more<\/em> than good enough.<\/p>\n<p>Women still outnumber men in terms of the volume of women graduating from high school&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As well as the number entering <em>and completing<\/em> tertiary education vs men.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Women have all the talent we need \u2013 but we also need the<strong> support and advocacy<\/strong> necessary to get promoted and achieve our true potential.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2881\" title=\"get promoted this year\" src=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9-1024x534.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9-1024x534.png 1024w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9-1536x802.png 1536w, https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Copy-of-Linkedin-Podcast-tiles-9.png 1640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\">Want to Get Promoted? Download\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rebeccasfreegift.com\">The 7 Habits of Female Execs Who Get Promoted<\/a><\/h6>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>What Next?<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s 2023 and, as a career coach who believes deeply in seeing women achieve their full potential&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t want you to feel invisible, undervalued and unrecognised<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want you to miss out on promotions or the pay rises that are appropriate for the impact you\u2019re making<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want to see you in a job or career that is neither exciting you nor playing to your strengths<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want you to be\u00a0doubting your value, your worth, your contribution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>So Let\u2019s Talk About How to Get Promoted &amp; Make 2023 Your Year!<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start challenging where you are&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And &#8216;flipping&#8217; the situation into something more valuable&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Are you with me?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s do it!<\/p>\n<h3>Flip #1:<\/h3>\n<p>Instead of absorbing and taking ownership of all the discriminatory nonsense out there (let\u2019s just call it what it is:<em> it\u2019s crap<\/em>) about what women are and <em>are not<\/em> capable of\u2026 <strong>stop and challenge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes of course we <em>can<\/em> work to <strong><em>be<\/em> better<\/strong> and create <strong>better outcomes<\/strong> for ourselves&#8230; that\u2019s true whatever your gender.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes there are external barriers to our progress as women.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s work hard to stick together ladies and not allow discrimination and bias to impact how we view ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not allow it to diminish our self-belief in our capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>You already have everything you need to be fulfilled and phenomenally successful.<\/p>\n<p>You can ask how much of this perspective is <strong>really \u2018me\u2019<\/strong> (is fair, is warranted, is real) and how much of this is just an old-fashioned, outmoded view?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Flip #2:<\/h3>\n<p>Instead of waiting for recognition,<strong>\u00a0seek it out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ask for it. Arrange a salary review. Arrange a performance review. Let it known that you want to get promoted.<\/p>\n<p>Make it clear to key decision makers what you want from your career.<\/p>\n<p>You really don\u2019t want to be \u2018grateful\u2019 for the role you have\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You want to be asking, unapologetically, for the opportunities, the roles and the pay that you really deserve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Flip\u00a0#3:<\/h3>\n<p>Instead of settling for mediocrity,\u00a0<strong>define what you\u00a0really\u00a0want from your career<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Decide what you want to happen in the next 12-24 months. What fresh opportunities?
