And I believe that it is important to think of your new role as exactly that: a privilege<\/em><\/i>.<\/p>\n

Your role is to communicate a vision\u2026<\/p>\n

And to build and coach the people in your team to achieve great things\u2026<\/p>\n

Possibly to achieve outcomes that, before now, they never thought themselves capable.<\/p>\n

That<\/em><\/i> is a true privilege indeed.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s talk about those first weeks and months in a new leadership position\u2026<\/p>\n

Rushing to Fix Everything ASAP, Without Taking Stock of the Bigger Picture<\/h2>\n

Taking on a new leadership role can be overwhelming.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s potentially so much to do.<\/p>\n

And what do you do first<\/em><\/i>?<\/p>\n

Try to avoid the compulsion to try and solve every challenge immediately.<\/p>\n

You do want some early-wins but you don\u2019t want to get stuck in a \u2018survival\u2019, fire-fighting mode either.<\/p>\n

Instead, take a step back and look more strategically at what needs to happen first<\/em><\/i>.<\/p>\n

Not Fully Understanding the Team You\u2019ve Inherited<\/h2>\n

It can be a mistake to try to put your own stamp on a new team without fully appreciating first (or acknowledging) what your team has just been through.<\/p>\n
