We all want<\/strong> to be liked. It\u2019s natural.<\/p>\n

Psychologists tells us that wanting to be liked<\/em> stems from our earliest societies where belonging to a tight knit group was critical for survival.<\/p>\n

The group would forage and hunt together, eat and live together.<\/p>\n

But the need to be liked<\/em> is different and has evolved over time:<\/p>\n

Needing to be liked is about seeking approval from a much wider group\u2026 i.e. everyone<\/em> and brings with it a range of heightened anxieties…<\/p>\n

Because being liked by everyone<\/em> is actually impossible, right?!<\/p>\n

Have you ever said something like this to yourself:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say that otherwise I\u2019ll be judged (and ultimately rejected) by the group.\u201d?<\/p>\n

If so, that\u2019s why we are digging deeper today!<\/p>\n

Let’s go:<\/p>\n

When I need<\/span> to be liked…<\/h2>\n

Other people’s views can affect me negatively.<\/p>\n

I might give greater weight to their opinion over my own.<\/p>\n

I might want everyone to like me (which is a faulty expectation).<\/p>\n

My response is personalised and emotional.<\/p>\n

When I want<\/span> to be liked…<\/h2>\n

Other people’s views don’t impact me because my worth isn’t dependent on what others might be thinking or might say.<\/p>\n

I might hear others’ view but can weigh them up objectively.<\/p>\n

I don’t expect everyone will agree with me.<\/p>\n

My response is objective and rational.<\/p>\n

\nWhat To Do About It<\/h2>\n

Do you know that your need to be liked is holding you back in life or in your career?<\/p>\n

How is it impacting how others perceive you?<\/p>\n

How is that impacting your leadership credibility?<\/p>\n

How is it impacting your ability to sleep soundly?!<\/p>\n

It might be time to start working on your mindset to set yourself up for greater success.<\/p>\n
