Well if it is, I\u2019ll tell you&#8230; you\u2019re not alone!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard countless women tell me they have left roles and organisations behind simply because they didn\u2019t feel appreciated or valued.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let that be you! Because feeling overlooked <em>hurts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Your first step towards achieving greater recognition is to define what &#8220;recognition&#8221; <em>means to you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I coached a lady once who was livid she hadn\u2019t been getting any recognition at work. \u201cIt\u2019s been years!\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve not had a review and I\u2019ve not had a good word said to me in all that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I asked her what \u201crecognition\u201d looked like for her, she angrily said, \u201cWell, you know&#8230;. you know&#8230;.!\u201d I gave her a bit of space to think to help her get clearer herself.<\/p>\n<p>After a while she said,\u00a0\u201cActually you know what, my boss does occasionally say, \u201cGood job\u201d to me but that\u2019s <em>not<\/em> what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What <em>do<\/em> you want?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want him to say something in public. I want him to say I\u2019ve been doing the most awesome job at our Monday status meeting. In front of everyone. <em>That\u2019s<\/em> what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without knowing what \u201crecognition\u201d looks or feels or sounds like for you, it\u2019s impossible to know what you\u2019re expecting or asking for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some questions to help you thrash this one out:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Who<\/strong> do you want to get this recognition from exactly? Your boss? A peer? Someone from the executive team? A client even?<\/li>\n<li>Would you like it to occur in a large <strong>public<\/strong> meeting?<\/li>\n<li>Or might you prefer receiving a quiet, <strong>private<\/strong> word instead?<\/li>\n<li>Would an <strong>email<\/strong> recognising your efforts satisfy you?<\/li>\n<li>Would a <strong>pay rise<\/strong> mean \u201crecognition\u201d for you?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Does the idea of being taken for a <strong>meal<\/strong> work for you?<\/li>\n<li>Do you just want a <strong>\u201cthank you\u201d<\/strong> for your brilliant work?<\/li>\n<li>Would you like small pieces of more <strong>regular feedback<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>Might &#8220;recognition&#8221; mean being given a <strong>bigger training budget<\/strong> for your own professional development?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Recognition<\/em> means totally different things to different people and it is important you are a) being recognised and rewarded for your work and b) it is being done in a way that meets your values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Georgia,&amp;quot; times new roman&amp;quot;,&amp;quot;bitstream charter&amp;quot;,times,serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;\">What are your experiences with this?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-774 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/illuminategrowth.com.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rebecca-written-signature-e1586500062326.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"87\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">Rebecca Allen, COI of Illuminate Personal Growth, works with professional women to help them take their careers to the next level.
