Who Must You Become to Reach Your Next Stretching Goal?

Say you have a big, exciting stretch goal you want to achieve such as,

  • I want to put my hand up for a new stretching role
  • I want a $50k pay rise
  • I want to speak at our next conference
  • I want to build a high performing team
  • I want to be known to key stakeholders
  • I want a senior level promotion

How do you approach it?

Do you do what you have always done – or do you approach it with a fresh strategy?

One of the most powerful questions in a leadership coach’s toolkit is,

“To achieve this outcome, who must you become?”

I have asked this question hundreds of times as a coach and it is always guaranteed to help a client take that step back, think in a new way, and come up with fresh insights.

“Who must you become?” is a wonderful question for a few reasons:

  1. It implies the client has the competence and capability to solve the problem themselves.
  2. It implies that the client doesn’t need to fundamentally change who they are – rather, that they can change their behaviour to achieve a new result.
  3. It implies achieving the outcome is a process that is within the client’s control.
  4. Lastly, it builds excitement and commitment by implying that this process is a learning journey that will help the client grow.

So you might be thinking already about a goal you have. I’m mindful not everyone loves the term ‘goal’, so if that’s you, simply replace the word with any other that you prefer (e.g. ambition, direction etc.)

I’d love to invite you to have that goal in mind as we look at our next step.

Now you have the goal, let’s now explore the question:

“Who must you become to achieve it?”

Grab a notebook and jot down your thoughts.

Here are some ideas to spur your curiosity :

  • I need to become someone who acts before feeling fully ready. I can’t wait around for confidence to build before I take action; taking action will build the confidence.
  • I need to become a learner which means I am not fixed to the outcome, but excited by the journey.
  • I need to become more disciplined so that I take small, consistent action.
  • I need to become tolerant of rejection. I might not get what I want straight away and that’s ok. I’ll get where I need to be with consistent action.
  • I need to become the person my boss is expecting me to be.
  • I need to become the leader I know I already am.

The Power of ‘Being’ over ‘Doing’

People talk all the time about the action they will take. This is DOING.

And sadly DOING can only get you so far.

What we need now, for a change of result, is a beautiful dose of BEING.

Who must you become... to achieve your next promotion, pay rise, stretch opportunity, high profile role…?
