3 Things NOT To Do in 2023… To Get Promoted This Year

Ladies! We are starting 2023 off with a bang – because I want to help you get promoted this year!

And I’m sharing 3 things you must NOT do in 2023…

If you want to be deeply fulfilled and successful in your career.

And…

If you prefer to listen to this conversation…

We just went live on our podcast – Her Ambitious Career – with this ep this morning.

Here’s the episode… and if reading is more your thing, read on!

3 Things NOT to do in 2023:

So, as I do every 1 January, I’m here to tell you what 3 things to AVOID doing this year…

Here is the first one…

It might seem a bit ‘heavy’ to start with this one…

Which is why we need to start with it!

#1 Do NOT Internalise Our Own Discrimination

Gender bias is still a challenge that we, as a society, continue to battle in the 21st century (believe it or not).

Which means that, in some workplaces, women are still encountering comments like this:

“You just need to be louder.”

“You need to be more assertive – but not too assertive.”

“You need to be more confident – if you’re going to be seen as a leader.”

“You’re not quite right for the role – despite your (extensive) qualifications and experience.”

Some women are excluded from the conversation – and the decision making table all together.

Whilst others are passed over for promotion in favour of a potentially less suitable (too often, male) candidate…

Who is also likely ‘mates with the boss’ and thus seen as a ‘safer’ option because… well, he’s just like the boss.

(That’s called affinity bias by the way).

What this complex challenge does, for many women, is they internalise the discrimination that they’re faced with, often reaching conclusions like this, whether consciously or not:

I must be the problem.”

I must not be good at this.”

I was passed over promotion because I’m not good enough.”

I must just need to work harder.”

We all know women are more than good enough.

Women still outnumber men in terms of the volume of women graduating from high school…

As well as the number entering and completing tertiary education vs men.

Women have all the talent we need – but we also need the support and advocacy necessary to get promoted and achieve our true potential.

#2 Do NOT Wait Around for Recognition

I see an awful lot of women come into my coaching practice, frustrated by the fact they aren’t getting the recognition they want.

Despite working long hours…

Despite consistently delivering on key outcomes…

And despite giving their work their all.

It doesn’t matter who you are…

It’s essential that you become your own #1 Fan.

It’s up to you to champion your own projects…

To learn how to advocate for yourself…

And to talk about (and share) your value.

Being humble has many benefits…

But it can also be a barrier to raising your visibility, getting promoted and landing the pay rises you want.

It’s important to learn the skills to ask – unapologetically – for what you want from your career.

Being the world’s best kept secret serves absolutely no-one – least of all, you. 😉

#3 Do NOT Settle for Mediocre Career Opportunities

How many women do you know, I wonder…

Who are frustrated by the lack of career opportunities available to them right now?

Do you know of women who are in roles at least a step below, or a pay grade below, where they should be?

Are you, or women you know, just settling for an ‘okay’ career opportunity, that doesn’t really play to your strengths or that doesn’t really ignite you?

This is your career.

This is your shot at finding meaningful work… work that you’re proud to churn out every day…

And…

If there’s one thing I’ve seen, in my 14 years as a career coach for corporate women…

It’s that the women who thrive most are operating in environments and with leadership that values them and their contributions.

So if you’re saying to yourself right now…

“I just can’t leave the organisation I work for to find more meaningful opportunities.”

I’d love to ask you this:

“What matters most to you?”

And…

If you’re saying things like:

“Paying the bills; Secure employment; Looking after my dependents…”

Then I’d love to ask:

“How could you still pay the bills, have secure employment, look after your dependents by also being in a job where you’re valued?”

Some of us are genuinely constrained by our jobs and options… but many people are not.

Maybe…

Staying stuck in this current role is not only doing you a disservice… but those closest to you as well?

Maybe…

Settling for a mediocre career opportunity right now, means you’re actually depriving the world of your true potential?

Maybe…

We desperately need to see the best of you?

Don’t settle.

You’ve got so much more to offer and it’s up to you to decide if you’re ready to pursue it.

What Next?

It’s 2023 and, as a career coach who believes deeply in seeing women achieve their full potential…

  • I don’t want you to feel invisible, undervalued and unrecognised
  • I don’t want you to miss out on promotions or the pay rises that are appropriate for the impact you’re making
  • I don’t want to see you in a job or career that is neither exciting you nor playing to your strengths
  • I don’t want you to be doubting your value, your worth, your contribution

So Let’s Talk About How to Get Promoted & Make 2023 Your Year!

Let’s start challenging where you are…

And ‘flipping’ the situation into something more valuable…

Are you with me?

Let’s do it!

Flip #1:

Instead of absorbing and taking ownership of all the discriminatory nonsense out there (let’s just call it what it is: it’s crap) about what women are and are not capable of… stop and challenge.

Sometimes of course we can work to be better and create better outcomes for ourselves… that’s true whatever your gender.

But sometimes there are external barriers to our progress as women.

Let’s work hard to stick together ladies and not allow discrimination and bias to impact how we view ourselves.

Let’s not allow it to diminish our self-belief in our capabilities.

You already have everything you need to be fulfilled and phenomenally successful.

You can ask how much of this perspective is really ‘me’ (is fair, is warranted, is real) and how much of this is just an old-fashioned, outmoded view?

Flip #2:

Instead of waiting for recognition, seek it out.

Ask for it. Arrange a salary review. Arrange a performance review. Let it known that you want to get promoted.

Make it clear to key decision makers what you want from your career.

You really don’t want to be ‘grateful’ for the role you have…

You want to be asking, unapologetically, for the opportunities, the roles and the pay that you really deserve.

Flip #3:

Instead of settling for mediocrity, define what you really want from your career.

Decide what you want to happen in the next 12-24 months. What fresh opportunities? What new challenges?

Decide that you’re worthy of having a career that is deeply meaningful.

Decide that you’re better than this. 🙂

You Are Worth It

These changes in behaviour may seem massive but they are not: they all boil down to making a new choice.

That’s it. You’ve just got to make a choice.

You are good enough.

You have got this.

What else will you NOT do in 2023?

What WILL you do instead?

Let us know in the Comments below 😉
