‘Settling’… ‘Coasting’… & How to Stop Undermining Yourself
I watched one of my favourite shows last night, Ted Lasso – have you seen it?
On the face of it, it’s just a TV series about a football club in a little town in England…
But what this show is actually exposing is the psychology of good and bad relationships…
Both the relationships you have with yourself and with other people.
One of the main characters is called Rebecca (oddly enough). She’s a divorcee in her early 50s and she’s desperate to find happiness in love once again.
She’s met a new man and after a few dates, begs her best friend Keeley to come on a double date so she (and her straight-talking partner Roy) can suss this guy out.
During this dinner, we watch wide-eyed (whilst gobbling popcorn on autopilot) as Rebecca’s new boyfriend reveals himself as being hideously egotistic, unsuitable and dull.
We, as the audience, know that Rebecca can do a lot better. And Roy knows it too.
So what will happen??
At the end of the night, Rebecca asks Keeley what she thinks of the new boyfriend,
“Yeah, he’s fine.” Keeley awkwardly and politely replies.
“Yeah, he’s fine right?” Rebecca says.
At this point surprisingly, Roy saves the day, stands square in front of Rebecca and tells it like it is,
“Fine?! You deserve someone who makes you feel like you’ve been struck by lightning. Don’t you dare settle for ‘fine’.”
Settling…
Coasting…
Not really living…
It all amounts to the same thing right?
When we settle for ‘fine’ we are telling ourselves we aren’t deserving of anything better.
But I know that isn’t you, is it?
I know you want so much more from your life and from your career…
Which is why I am here to help and guide you so that you start pushing back on mediocrity…
So you start taking on roles that give you every chance of success…
So that you start saying ‘no’ to opportunities that just aren’t good enough.
In Roy’s words,
“Don’t you dare settle for fine.”
