17 Ways to Know if You’re Burning Out

I interviewed Sally McGrath recently for my podcast.

She’s a health and wellbeing expert who specialises in working with corporate women struggling with burnout.

One of the questions I asked her was how to identify if you’re actually on the verge of burnout…

So you can take steps to combat it.

There was so much valuable insight that Sally shared, I thought I’d distil the symptoms of burnout into three categories for you…

Because…

I don’t know about you…

But when you’re in the midst of overwhelm, it’s kinda hard to see the wood for the trees.

So I thing that by listing out these symptoms, it might help you help yourself even faster.

I’ve divided all these symptoms into 3 categories to make it simple: Mental, Behaviours and Outcomes.

See if you can recognise yourself in any of these:

The Mental Symptoms of Burnout

  1. Negative thoughts about yourself, others and your outcomes
  2. Frustration
  3. Cynicism
  4. Cognitive issues
  5. Tiredness due to a lack of sleep

The Behavioural Symptoms of Burnout

  1. Disinterest in your work
  2. Disinterest in your life
  3. Exhaustion
  4. Lacking motivation
  5. Being preoccupied with your work when you aren’t at work
  6. Working out of hours and at night
  7. Explosive reactions to small things

The Outcomes of Burnout

  1. General decrease in satisfaction
  2. Overall health problems
  3. Interpersonal problems
  4. Slipping job performance
  5. Inability to make clear decisions
