3 Ways to Bounce Back from a ‘Bad’ Interview

Sometimes you leave an interview and you feel wretched.

Maybe the interviewer asked you some questions you weren’t prepared for…

Maybe he was a bit confronting

Maybe he was relentless, consistently asking you to explain a ‘bad’ career decision on your CV…

If any of that resonates, listen up!

The best thing to do after an interview like this is to take a deep breath and do a little self reflection.

> What are your initial thoughts right now?

> How could you have managed that a bit better?

> What was the interviewer really assessing there?

Some interviewers are harder on candidates than others.

Some like to push candidates to see how they will respond under pressure.

Some just want to dive a bit deeper to understand the logic of your career decision making.

There could be a lot of reasons why this interviewer took this more aggressive tactic…

And they have only got 20 minutes to suss you out (which isn’t long at all)…

You can’t control the tactics they use but you can control your response.

Here are 3 tips to help you:

#1:

Reassess the potential holes / gaps / potential ‘problem’ areas in your CV…

How can you spin them into a positive?

#2:

If you think a recruiter is probing to see how you respond under pressure, show them you’re great under pressure early in the interview:

How will you respond during the interview?

Which examples from your experience can you share that demonstrate your determination and resilience?

#3:

Look at where you have a solid track record already.

How can you bring that into the discussion?

Delivering a successful interview is largely about how you position and market yourself
to fit the role you’re after.

And never let one person or one interviewer knock your confidence.

Remember you’ve had other successful interviews before… this experience is just a blip. Learn from it, move on and come back stronger…

By learning how to respond to questions like this in the future.

Tricky questions are just part of the process…

And the more you practice for them, the more you’ll grow to love them!
