Too many women avoid building relationships with their senior exec team, but why when it…
Ep 77 – What Makes a Strong Manager?, with guest Holly Stanton
What are the key skills of solid management? We are talking about EQ skills, inclusion, encouragement and a raft of other valuable skills today!
Today I am talking with Holly Stanton from Salesforce…
Who is sharing her experience of what makes a strong manager by sharing key attributes of positive mentors and managers she has had throughout her career.
We are talking about:
* Leading with empathy
* Being direct, honest and inclusive
* And taking a genuine interest in supporting your team members to achieve their own ambitions.
Holly talks about her experience with an empathetic, supportive manager earlier in her career…
A second mentor, who was inclusive, open and trusting and who would coach Holly when she needed support to solve her own challenges.
A third mentor, at Salesforce, who created a psychologically safe environment for the team to thrive.
And a fourth mentor who encouraged Holly to play to her strengths and ignore her perceived weaknesses.
Career Advice from Holly:
1. Get yourself a coach – “it helps you uncover who you are and what you want to achieve!” (I had the privilege of coaching Holly over 15 years ago! Rebecca x)
2. “Understand yourself, your strengths and others’ strengths.”
3. Sometimes ‘bad’ managers can teach us a lot about how to become better managers ourselves.
Holly says:
“One of my terrible managers who micro-managed everyone [ironically] taught me the difference between ‘contagious’ and ‘contained’ managers, contagious being inspirational etc when that wasn’t our experience of that manager at all!” (Holly Stanton, guest on Her Ambitious Career podcast)
