How to Get Paid What You’re Worth

Money isn’t everything; but it’s still important to get paid what you’re worth.

Do you agree?

Hi there, I’m Rebecca Allen and I’m a Career Success Coach for Corporate Women.

It makes sense, right, that if you can’t swim and you go riding on a speed boat…

You’ve got to wear a lifejacket.

Because, if you fall in…

Then it’s already too late.

Negotiating pay is much the same.

How to Get Paid What You’re Worth

Salary negotiation is about being prepared and being confident in your value

Because firstly, I want to make sure you are prepared…

And secondly, I don’t want you to undersell yourself ever again.

Settling For Being Underpaid is Not Being Paid What You’re Worth

Having to wait for another 12 months to get another opportunity to talk about the state of your salary is a very, very long time indeed.

Settling for an average salary is not okay.

Being grateful for your role or employment (although lovely) is simply not enough.

I’m sharing some words of tough love here now…

You are working really, really hard…

And making your company more profitable every day, right?

I’d say that is deserving of some proper financial recognition…

Wouldn’t you?

Think of it like this:

Hundreds of years ago, when money wasn’t the focus, people would go to markets and trade goods instead.

“If you give me your goat, then I’ll give you my iron shield”… that sort of thing.

Negotiations were based on making fair trades.

The world today is no different… even if money is involved.

You being paid appropriately for the work you do is a fair trade

It’s an exchange of value, just the same.

But What’s Really Stopping You From Asking for that Pay Rise?

In my experience, there are two things that are likely stopping you:

1.      Negative beliefs (about yourself, your worth, your value, concerns about being judged…)

2.      A lack of strategy

And that’s it… simple, right?!

So, if you’ve got a minute, let’s look at both right now together, shall we?

So Have a Think….

What your beliefs are about asking for a pay rise?

Are they really positive, empowering, unstoppable, deserving, confident beliefs…?

Or not?

I’m sensing, if you’ve read this far, you might have a few doubts about your ability to negotiate a better deal for yourself…

So if that’s you, here are a few questions to get you pumping:

  1. What if you decided right now that you’re going to ask for a 10% or 20% salary increase?
  2. What would that new monthly income equate to in a $ value?
  3. How would that extra income benefit you and others around you?
  4. What’s the compound benefit of that increase over 12 months?
  5. How about over 24 months?
  6. What difference would that money make to you and to your life?
  7. How much more happy, confident and engaged would you be at work with that income coming in?
  8. How much happier would you be at home?

I’m guessing it would make a big difference…

Because when you are paid appropriately, it builds phenomenal confidence and esteem.

And I’m guessing that is worth asking for.

Let Me Guess: You’ve Got Some Objections?

“But wait Rebecca!” you say…

“Getting paid what I’m worth is hard. What if my boss judges me negatively for asking for more money?!”

And I say,

“Well… what if instead of judging you, your boss is impressed to see an employee in front of them who can negotiate? What if they see an employee successfully validating her own impact? What if they respect that employee for highlighting her ambitions and so earmark her for future opportunities?”

Here’s a quick tip:

Remember to focus on what you DO offer, rather than focusing on what you

feel you LACK.

Next, Let’s Talk Strategy…

A pay increase strategy begins the moment you just got a pay rise. 😊

Be thinking months in advance about…

  1. Who needs to know that I want a pay rise?
  2. Who needs to know what $ pay rise I see as fair / I am expecting?
  3. What action do they need to see from me to justify that request?
  4. How can I make sure (in the months before my pay review meeting) they know the value I am delivering?

Here’s another quick tip:

Don’t assume that by working hard you’ll automatically get a pay rise.

Psst! I’m Guessing You May Have Another Objection?

“But wait Rebecca!” you say…

“I HATE the idea of doing office politics! I shouldn’t have to shout about what I’m doing… people should just know.”

And I say,

“Firstly your boss isn’t a mind reader.

And secondly, working extremely hard is an activity but it is not a strategy.

If you want to build your exec presence, land better career opportunities and get paid appropriately…. then you need to learn how to position yourself properly and ask for what you want.”

You’ve Got This!

To be really successful at negotiating your own pay…

Your first step is always believing that you are already adding ample value to warrant the pay increase.

In my 10 years+ experience, as a Career Coach to corporate women…

I see far too many brilliant, intelligent women self-sabotage their chances of promotion and pay rises because they ‘feel undeserving’ or ‘not ready’.

Don’t let that be you!

Become your own best coach and start documenting all the value you’re already adding and I guarantee, you’ll be blown away by what you uncover.
