LinkedIn Optimisation Part 2: How to Use Keywords So Recruiters Find You Fast

What Are Linkedin Keywords?

Keywords are a vital aspect of your LinkedIn profile; ignore them at your peril!

So, what are LinkedIn keywords?

These are the words that recruiters are searching for when they are looking for candidates.

The most important ones are:

  • Location (city)
  • Job title
  • Skills

What Linkedin Keywords Do I Need?

To work out which keywords are most relevant to you, check out job descriptions: they are crammed with them!

When setting your location, choose a city and not a country (a recruiter is looking to place you in a particular role in a particular city, even if there is remote work involved).

If you would like to work in a different city to where you live now, your desired city should feature in your profile.

When it comes to job titles, think about the job title you have as well as the job title you want to have. What are the key words here? These keywords should definitely feature in your header and throughout your work history too.

And lastly, skills. These are very important when it comes to optimising your LinkedIn profile.

What skills do you have?

What skills does the role you want require?

Which skills would a recruiter be searching for to find candidates suitable for this role?

Don’t Keyword-Stuff on Linkedin

You can and should add skills all over your LinkedIn profile but don’t overcram or write repeated keywords, thinking you can outsmart the algorithm.

That means do write: ‘Experience in managing P&L’

But don’t write: ‘Experience in managing P&L managing P&L managing P&L’

Add Skills To Your Linkedin Title Header:

That means do write: ‘Elizabeth Singer MSc, adaptable leader, cashflow management, month end reporting, cash flow analysis’

Don’t miss a trick and just write your name in the header – add SKILLS!

Add Skills To Your Linkedin Job History:

That means do add skills and accomplishments to each role…

Don’t miss a trick by just listing the job title, company and the dates you worked there.

How can you update your Linkedin profile to be more skills focused?
