How Does a Leader Develop Empathy?

One of the most interesting moments in a workshop I facilitated last week, with a group of senior leaders, came during a discussion about empathy.

We explored how quickly leaders move into problem-solving mode, often before people feel heard, or have been given the chance to solve challenges themselves.

One exec reflected:
“I realised I spend more time preparing my response than understanding the concern.”

There was nodding and furrowed brows.

How Does a Leader Develop Empathy?

The shift we practised was simple: listen to understand first, respond second (and better with a question, rather than a solution).

When leaders communicate with empathy:

·      Conversations are less defensive
·      Trust increases
·      Difficult discussions become far more productive

The best leaders and communicators are rarely the loudest voices in the room.
Often, they’re the leaders who make others feel understood and empowered.

Human-centred leadership is no longer optional, it’s essential.
Let’s build it together – get in touch.
