5 Critical Leadership Capabilities in a World of AI

Everybody’s talking about AI.

And a question I am being asked by HR professionals is, “We want to know – what leadership capabilities will become more important because of AI?”

As AI takes on more of the analysis, content creation, problem-solving and even decision-making support, the value and need for uniquely human leadership skills increases.

The coaching work I do with emerging leader cohorts inevitably includes a deep dive into these core skills.

5 Critical Leadership Capabilities in a World of AI

1. Understand people. Leaders need to build trust, motivation and connection – and know too how to develop the people around them.

2. Lead through uncertainty. Navigating change, ambiguity and anxiety is fast becoming a major global need. Leaders need to know how to show up with clarity and direction, without needing to have all the answers themselves.

3. Build resilience. This capability is about creating the conditions for people to adapt, recover and keep moving, when goalposts keep shifting. Learning basic positive psychology will also be incredibly useful.

4. Think strategically. Leaders will need to elevate their thinking beyond operational tasks and become adept at communicating strategy and getting buy-in. Influence will be key.

5. Challenge thinking. The ability to think critically, question assumptions and test ideas will be essential skills to develop too. Even though AI can produce answers to questions very quickly, leaders need to know which questions to ask to build reliable judgment.

The emerging leaders we develop today will be leading teams in a future workplace we can’t fully predict.

So perhaps our focus right now shouldn’t just be:

“How do we teach our people to use AI?”

It should also be:

“How do we develop the leaders who will lead humans through an AI-enabled future?”

How We Help

Potential alone won’t prepare your emerging leaders for the complexity of senior leadership. Your future leaders need to be better equipped to take on greater scope, build stronger teams and be confident with more complex business challenges.

We work with your emerging leader cohort, with each leader 1:1 as well as in a group coaching environment throughout the year. Core skills that we often work on include: defining leadership identity and business impact; strategic and enterprise thinking; building trusting relationships and influence; developing emotional intelligence and human-centred leadership; and creating the conditions for teams to succeed. If you’re looking for a leadership coach in Sydney or Australia, get in touch. We would love to speak with you.
