Leadership Coaching is About Finding Solutions – Not Staying Stuck in the Problem

One of the things I believe strongly about leadership coaching is this: a good coach doesn’t keep their client stuck in the problem.

Of course problems need to be acknowledged.

People need space to identify their challenge, reflect and feel heard.

But endlessly circling the issue keeps them stuck and won’t instigate movement.

At some point, the conversation has to shift toward possibility, choice, and action. And the sooner the better.

I remember a coaching session where a leader spent a long time explaining why a situation felt impossible (she was stuck in ‘problem’).

I asked her:
“What would progress look like – if you believed a solution was possible?”

BOOM!

The energy shifted immediately from frustration to ownership.

Good coaching isn’t about rescuing people or giving them the answers.

It’s about helping people reconnect with their own agency.

Because transformation usually begins the moment someone realises:
“I actually have more influence over this than I thought.”
